I participated in a technology institute where they had daily activities to encourage interaction among a group of educators who are interested in using technology to enhance learning. One activity in particular caught my attention. They called it the daily extend.

I think this kind of activity would be good for encouraging engagement in my online courses. This year I will to try something like this.  What I am currently struggling with is if it should be targeted a) broadly at nursing students, b) students in a research course or c) be more narrow to a specific course.

The Goal  – Engagement

The reason I want to try a daily extend is because I want to create a sense of community among my students. The extends would not necessarily be connected to course learning objectives. They would be aimed at encouraging critical thinking in a fun way.  Especially for online courses, I need to find a way to be more approachable and “human.” I think that this activity would help to show a different side of me that is not too personal and therefore would be considered a professional way to engage students.
