Building Empathy

Video is being used by Heather to build empathy among students in a nursing program. What stood out to me was two things – how important empathy is and that it decreases over time in a nursing program. I have some guesses as to why that may be, but that is a topic for another post.

The VR video was really amazing for showing the patient’s view of what was going on. I love this idea. The videos were filmed with a 360 go-pro camera and simulation manikin. The patient interviews were good because they involved storytelling. I am convinced that we need something like this in our programs. It would be nice if we could share the videos openly to promote collaboration and decrease the associated workload.

Challenges include:

  • Access to working technology with good resolution. She suggest partnering with someone with video production expertise.
  • Timing – it took a long time to set up. she recommends a full day.
  • Patient recruitment was also difficult. Some pre-screening is needed.
